2017 Nominations

We are very excited and proud to announce the nominations for the Matilda Awards 2017. The judges saw 63 shows in 2017, which is an increase of 15 shows from 2016.

I hope you will agree the nominations are outstanding and all shows nominated tell an amazing story of the depth, variety, commitment and strength of the Queensland Arts Sector. There are 16 categories plus the Gold Matilda (which will be announced at the awards ceremony)

The Matilda Awards Ceremony will again be a fantastic celebration of our industry and I look forward to seeing a full house at the Brisbane Powerhouse on Tuesday 6th February 2018.

A New Judging Panel for 2018

With the end of 2017 in sight and another amazing year of theatre behind us, the Matilda Awards Judging Panel are now making their decisions in regards to award recipients. We’ll make the announcements in mid-January 2018 with the awards ceremony set for Tuesday 6th December 2018 at Brisbane Powerhouse.

Some stats you might be interested in:

  • Matilda Award Judges have seen 63 shows in 2017;
  • 310 judge attendances at the 63 shows;
  • An estimate of 930 hours of theatre viewing by Matilda Judges.

This an amazing achievement and I say a BIG thank you to the judging panel of Rosemary Walker, Olivia Stewart, Troy Ollerenshaw, Xanthe Coward, James Harper, Anna Yen, Elise Greig, Cameron Pegg, Baz McAlister and Annette Kerwitz. It’s been a great effort with Troy and Rosemary in particular seeing 49 shows each this year.

The Executive Committee of Sharondell Grennan, Hamish Clift, Paul Adams and myself have worked on governance and drafted and approved a new constitution that now provides a stronger foundation to how and why the Matilda Awards operates. It gives us a foundation from which to work about judging criteria, how judges are selected, how long people remain on the committee which of course allows for judges to remain fresh.

To implement this new constitution all the judging positions have been declared vacant and we are now accepting applications from motivated individuals from all corners of the arts sector. If you are a techie, director, actor, acrobat, academic, critic/reviewer, producer then we’d love to hear from you.

Minor conflicts of interest (ie. judges who are also practitioners) are dealt with throughout the judging process and should not deter someone wishing to join the panel.

Find out more about the position and apply online here.

Once again a BIG thank you to our fabulous judging panel – its been a great year, and with some new faces 2018 will prove to be an even bigger and better Matildas!

Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

Look forward to hearing from you.
