Playlab Receives 2017 Gold Matilda Award

The 2017 Matilda Committee have awarded the Gold Matilda Award to Playlab.

For over 44 years Playlab has supported new writing for theatre and has provided outstanding opportunities for playwrights through development programs, readings and workshops. Playlab has also offered vital resources to theatre companies, teachers and educators through publication.

During 2017 Playlab entered a significant new phase in their history evolving into Queensland’s new-writing theatre company.  This puts Playlab in a truly unique positon nationally as the only company to take a work from idea through development, onto stage and into publication. Development, production and publication.

2018 will see Playlab continue to provide outstanding opportunities for playwrights from inception to the stage through multiple entry points for a work at any level of readiness, and from playwrights of any experience.

In 2017 Playlab’s inaugural production was Merlynn Tong’s tour de force, Blue Bones.  In 2018 Playlab will produce the premiere production of Kathryn Marquet’s Dead Devils of Cockle Creek as part of La Boite’s mainhouse season.

Playlab will also continue their advocacy for local and national presenters and producers through their catalogue of contemporary Australian plays offered for sale, a commitment to Independents with digital publications through Playlab Indie as well as their workshops, play readings and Playwright-In-Residence program.
