Proposed Changes to The Matilda Awards

The Executive Committee and Judging Panel are committed to providing regular updates on our processes and procedures and to consult with the theatre sector when we consider some improvements or amendments to the way we manage the awards process.

We are currently considering some changes to the Awards format during 2022, and seek your comments on these proposed changes that are intended to reflect current industry and wider community expectations.

Please consider the two resolutions below and let us know whether you agree or disagree or whether you have other points of view:

1.    Resolution to change Award categories ‘male’ and ‘female’ to gender neutral references, awarding two leading performer and two supporting performer awards (instead of one male, one female in each category)

·         Allows for inclusion of all performers

·         Reflects current thinking in the industry and wider community

2.    Resolution to change ‘best’ to ‘outstanding achievement’. Eg ‘outstanding achievement by a leading performer’; ‘outstanding achievement by a director’; ‘outstanding achievement in production design’, etc.

·         Removes the element of hierarchy

·         Mitigates the sense of competition

·         Allows potential nominees to be considered on their own merit rather than pitted against other industry members

We acknowledge our national and interstate awards counterparts, The Arias and Greenroom Awards, who have already adopted similar changes to their award categories.

Our commitment to support and advocate for Queensland’s theatre sector is ongoing.  Over the next twelve months, we will continue to undertake research and consultation with relevant industry counterparts to ensure the Matilda Awards are recognised nationally for high standards of management and process.
